Spring fishing for pike and musky

It may seem silly to say that Inland Northwest fishermen have "Esox" discovered fishing. After all, the "Northern Pike", and her half siblings, the "tiger musky" in this neck of the wood for several years. Northern pike were illegally in the lake side of Coeur d'Alene River system in 1970 with a mature pike fishing is based almost entirely introduced into Lake Coeur d'Alene since 1980. Bowls have been part of the human existence since we began to hold things and want to keep them. Wood turning bowls has been part of life ever since someone realized that a piece of wood could be hollowed to hold water, food or other treasures. Some of the first indications we have of wood turners are pictures of Egyptian turners on the side of pyramids where one turned wood while another made the wood move with a bow. They were making bowls.

Wood turning bowls became a common need in the villages of the world to the point where "Turner" is almost as common a name as "Smith." The village wood turner would produce a great deal of the needed kitchen supplies known as "treen" and many of these would be bowls.

Bowls are so common that we forget how elegant they can be. To turn a bowl is not a hard thing, to turn an elegant bowl is difficult. It must have the proper ratio of diameter to height but the mathematical formulas that might be thought to help disappear into insignificance. Turned wooden bowls are generally, like most bowls, fairly small as compared to a piece of significant architecture or a statue by Henry Moore. While I have worked on bowls as much as four feet in diameter and have seen larger, the champion size at the time of this writing is about 7 feet. Most so called large bowls will be 14 to 18 inches around and for most families a 10 to 12 inch salad bowl is big enough.

All of this means that bowls are looked at from a lot of different angles. That salad bowl you see as you approach the table changes in perspective when you sit down. The question in design is how to balance everything so that a bowl seen from above is also elegant seen side on and from a vast degree of angles in between. Will it look as good for the six foot two person at the side as it does for the five foot four one at the head of the table?

Wood turning bowls becomes then, a life long search for the "right" bowl. Of course this is true for the potter as well as the turner and for the ceramicist as well. A quick look through the history of pottery reveals the search for shape in our common bowl as an ongoing part of the story of mankind. Wood turners of today are in good company.

At first it is simply a matter of putting a block of wood on the lathe and getting a bowl at the end. All the concentration goes into cutting form and seeing the shavings fly. There is a mystery with the wood itself that must be handled.

In order to turn a bowl you need a big enough piece of wood. Unfortunately, wood this size has usually cracked in the drying so a turner needs to start with wet or "green" wood. This wood will warp as it dries so a wood turner quickly learns patience. First the bowl is roughed from green wood and allowed to warp as it dries. Once dried it is remounted on the lathe and finish turned, sanded and a wood finish applied. So our beginner has a lot of very enjoyable learning to do.

Then comes the day that things change. A bowl blank is removed from the drying pile and mounted to the lathe. Fairly quickly it is returned to round and brought to final thickness. The surface is sanded and a finish is applied. It has become a bowl but without all the difficulty of before. Our turner is well along the learning curve.

Now the question becomes not "is it a bowl?" but "is it a good bowl?" That leads to considerations of what makes a good bowl. How thick should the sides be given a certain size and does that change with color and weight of wood? Is the side of a pleasing curve and will it still look pleasing when gazed at from above as well as below?

These and other questions are the kind that will keep the search interesting for the perfect form in an old style vessel. Wood turning bowls can be a lifetime search.

Spring Fishing for Pike & Musky

It may sound silly to say that Inland Northwest anglers have discovered "Esox" fishing. After all, the "Northern Pike" and its half brothers and sisters, the "Tiger Musky", have been around this neck of the woods for several years. Northern Pike were illegally introduced into the lateral lakes of the Coeur d'Alene river system in the 1970's with a mature pike fishery being pretty much established throughout all of Lake Coeur d'Alene by the 1980's. There is also a well-established Pike population in the Pend Orielle River system. While the debate rages over the negative impacts to the native species and established cold-water fisheries, the fact remains, the Northern Pike is probably here to stay. During a recent visit to Coeur d'Alene, "In-Fisherman" personality, "Al Lindner" was quoted as saying that the next U.S. record pike may very well come from Coeur d'Alene Lake.

In addition to the Northern Pike, intentional and planned introduction by fisheries biologists of the Northern Pike/Musky hybrids, (known as the "Tiger Musky"), have been stocked in select lakes in Washington State to provide a large species trophy fish and to predate on populations of less desirable species.But do many anglers actually fish to intentionally target these species? The fact is that fishing lures and techniques utilized for bass work quite well for pike also. Furthermore, since bass and pike tend to inhabit the same areas this further elevates the frequency of pike or musky catches.

Many area have anglers found that the thrill of the strike and the subsequent battles to boat these behemoths were worth the effort to target them specifically. Taking advantage of the opportunistic feeding behavior of Pike, "dead-baiting" or "smelting" was born. A waiting game, "smelting" involves the use of a frozen dead smelt or herring embedded with two hooks and suspended off the bottom by means of a large foam float or bobber. The fisherman simply waits until the bobber starts to take off and then sets the hook. While effective, and responsible for some very large Pike, the technique misses the excitement that comes with a top-water strike. Bass fishermen know what I'm talking about. Nothing gets the heart thumping more than seeing your quarry ferociously attack a lure while aggressively ripping it across the water.

Actively targeting and pursuing Pike and Tiger Musky often involves utilizing good fish-finding sonar to track submerged weed lines, research into where the fish stage and spawn in the spring, and often hundreds, (if not thousands), of casts of large heavy jerk-baits, spoons, spinner baits, and buck tails. It's definitely not for the fisherman who is happy to sit and nap on the shore waiting for the fish to bite. Sometimes all the angler will get for his trouble is sore arms and shoulders, but often, he is rewarded with a heart-stopping strike where his prey pounds the lure resulting in a water-churning fight.

Large Pike in the early spring take to the shallow, weed-choked bays and inlets to spawn. Often retrieving baits through this salad of vegetation is nearly impossible. Making it even more maddening... you can often see large monster pike just below the surface. You know that there is no way that you can retrieve a jerk-bait past them without snagging huge clumps in the process. Even if you could, they often turn their noses up at larger baits during this time. The answer is often "finesse baits". Small soft plastic fish imitations, weighted only with an off-set hook, and cast past the targeted fish. Spinning rods and reels seem to work best with such light weight baits but some adept bait-casters will do just fine as well. As you retrieve you attempt to bring the bait within eyesight of, but not too close. If you see the Pike aggressively moving after the bait you might actually speed up your retrieval. You might get a fish to eye your bait, approach to within inches, and then turn away. Varying your presentation by a series of twitches, stalls, jerks and teasing movements can often trigger the strike. The really exciting part of this is actually having the conditions to watch the whole process. It takes a relatively calm surface with little or no wind, a good pair of polarized sunglasses and a boat with a quiet electric trolling motor. Still quieter approaches might be attained with a push-pole. Obviously, you want to get close enough to see the fish, but not so close that you spook them.

The solution has been the introduction of fluorocarbon lines. Strong, nearly invisible in the water, and highly abrasion resistant, fluorocarbon works quite well as a leader material with these toothy critters. It needs to be at least 18 to 20 pound test and you will still loose a few to line cutting, but the majority will be unable to sever it. After each fish you would do well to feel the line for any nicks, cuts, or abrasions, then trim and re-tie. The best I have used has been the "P-Line" products of pure fluorocarbon. You should try to select a color matched to the water you're fishing.

One other thing needs to be said regarding weather. One of my best days fishing for Tiger Musky's was an early spring day during repeated rain squalls and lightning. I don't recommend being on the water during an electrical storm. That being said; during a two hour period of brief rain storms, I caught six Tiger Musky trolling a Lucky-Craft Pointer 128 in Aurora Black. This bait actually has been my "Go-to" bait for Pike and Musky.

Try some of these techniques the next time you are on the water where there are Pike and Musky. You just might find that the next Pike or Musky you catch was not an "incidental" catch, and was actually the fish you intended to catch.

10-Minute 10+10 Rainbow Chopped Salad for Weight Loss

You'll get a kick out of this - watching me in my own arena, sweating bullets.

You see, my big sister, Wendy (okay, not really bigger anymore, but older - once a big sister, always a big sister to a little sister), and I were recently visiting our parents.

We both eat the same crazy way - like rabbits. So we get the stuff out for our first, second, and main course - a huge, hunkin' salad for two - and she says to me, "Okay, Leslie, I want to see you do what you claim. Make this salad in 10 minutes."

The challenge was on, and I was the one on the hot seat. (Big sisters are such a pain sometimes and forever bossy!)

How could I refuse? I looked at the clock and jumped into the game.

I started washing the Romaine and butter lettuce. Oh dear, where was my mother's salad spinner. Stop the clock. Search for the spinner. I finally find it tucked away, out of reach, and lo and behold, it is a baby one. Oh, no, I'd be all day a spinnin' those green leaves.

Start the clock. Wash, wash, wash, spin, spin, spin, and spin some more. Okay, whew, the minutes are ticking away, but the lettuce is washed and spun dry.

Next: chop the lettuce. Wait a sec. Stop the clock! I can't find a knife with a large enough blade to quickly chop vegetables and, oh, yeah, I had forgotten - my mother doesn't like sharp knives. Greeeeat - my only choice of weapon is a dull, kindergarten knife.

I take a deep breath. Start the clock....oh, no, is this the only cutting board my mom has - it's too small - okay, Leslie, quit moaning (and big sister, QUIT gloating) and get to chopping - chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop.

Finally...the greens are washed, spun dry, and chopped. Now to find a large enough trough for the green bounty. Oh, dear. The frantic hunt through the cupboards is on - where, oh, where is there a bowl big enough for this gigantic salad for two. Stop the clock!

"Moooooooommmmmmyyyyyy, where is your largest bowl?"

And yes, at that point, my mother's name went from a middle-aged woman's "Mom" to a whiney little girl's "Mommy."

My mommy comes to my rescue. I smile sweetly. Glare at my sister with that big "I told you so" grin on her face. I grit my teeth on my tongue to prevent spillage of words. Start the clock.

Now to wash and chop the raw vegetables to add to the greens - darn this knife - chop, chop, chop, chop, and chop some more. Okay, whew, I throw the veggies into the lettuce to make my signature salad with 10 different vegetables, including the two kinds of lettuce and sprouts.

Voila! Done. Oh, no, I'm not - I have to find a lemon and some kind of vinegar for the dressing. Don't bother stopping the clock - 10 minutes is long gone.

At least 45 minutes from start to finish, my smirking big sister and ever-so-humbled me sit down to a feast - we feast our bodies with the best food and feast our spirits with each other's love, companionship, and the fun of keeping little sister in her proper place.

Okay, I totally get it. Now I know why so many of you complain about how long it takes to make a salad. Wash your greens and veggies ahead of time and keep them together in the refrigerator. Make sure you have the right tools and they are strategically located.

The recipe and instructions below were birthed from two sources: sheer exasperation and my sister's strong "suggestion" to write down what I do to make my 10+10 signature salad.

I pass the challenge on to you. After you have practiced with all the right tools, see if you can make a 10+10 salad in 10 minutes? I promise, cross my heart, when I am home, I can and do every day.

Dr. Leslie's 10-Minute 10+10 Rainbow Chopped Salad

Ingredients (Dr. Leslie's favorites--choose 10 favorite vegetables to build your own salad)

o Lettuce (2 lettuces=2 different vegetables for "10" count): 2 kinds equivalent to 1 head (Romaine, green-leafy or red-leafy, bib, and/or butter--NOT iceberg)

o Spinach: couple of handfuls

o Sprouts (3 different sprouts=3 vegetables): alfalfa, mung bean, or mixed bean

o Red vegetables: 1 tomato, ½ red bell pepper, ¼ cup radishes, ¼ cup red onion

o Green vegetables: ½ cucumber, ½ cup green cabbage

o Purple vegetable: ½ cup purple cabbage

o White vegetable: ¼ cup cauliflower

o 1 avocado (yes! actually a fruit!)

o Other options: broccoli, carrots, zucchini, yellow squash, green or orange pepper, snap peas, yellow onions

II. The "Must" Tools

o Large salad spinner--10¼" in diameter (Note: no holes in the bottom)

o Large cutting board--20¾" x 15"

o Chef's knife (sharp) with 8" blade

o Boning knife (sharp) with straight, narrow 6" blade

o Peeler

o Large bowl (the largest of the 4 stacked Pyrex glass bowls)

o Two oversized spoons or fork and spoon for tossing

III. Directions

1. Take all ingredients out of refrigerator and wash. If possible, wash vegetables for 2 salads ahead of time so they are ready to go.

2. Using salad spinner, spin the lettuce and spinach until very dry

3. Finely chop lettuce and spinach--it's easier to chew--and fill up a bowl large enough to contain a salad that will fill you up. (It takes time to learn how much salad is the right amount for you.)

4. Finely chop vegetables and place on top of large bed of lettuce and spinach.

5. Squeeze ½ a lemon over salad, along with a couple of shakes of balsamic vinegar (or any vinegar of choice).

6. Mix salad until the avocado coats the lettuce and vegetables very well. The salad will shrink down about 1/3.

IV. Helpful hints

Wash all green-leafy vegetables ahead of time so they are ready to go when you are ready to eat a salad.

Spin lettuce and spinach as dry as possible--they store better--and store in air-tight container.

Store all vegetables in the same area or same bag in your refrigerator so they are very accessible.

Chop green-leafy vegetables and other vegetables very finely to make chewing easier.

Dr. Leslie's 10-Second Secret
Salad Dressing

I. Ingredients

1 huge green-leafy salad with 10 different vegetables

½ of a fresh lemon or lime

Organic balsamic vinegar (or any favorite vinegar)

(BONUS: Almost no calories in dressing and extra nutrients from the lemon or lime)

II. Directions

1. Cut one lemon or lime in half and use fingers to squeeze the juice out of the lemon or lime onto the salad.

2. Give the bottle of balsamic vinegar a few shakes over the salad for desired amount.

3. Mix very well. If an avocado has been added to the salad, the avocado coats the salad, giving it a wonderful flavor and texture.

4. Stick fork into the vegetables, insert vegetables into mouth, bite down, and chew!

5. Stop eating when your brain tells you to stop. Throw the rest away. It is more of a waste to eat more food than you need than it is to feed the garbage disposal. Garbage disposals are cheaper and easier to replace than your body--a little different perspective than the "lick-your-plate" mentality that most of us were raised with.

After eating a large salad for lunch, you will get hungry in a couple of hours because raw vegetables digest quickly. That's what's supposed to happen--good food goes in, moves through you relatively quickly, the nutrients become a part of you, and the waste comes out. Very simple and normal process.

After eating a large salad for lunch, I get hungry within about 2½ hours. Very easy solution to hunger...EAT!

Simple rule: eat when hungry; stop eating when your brain tells you that you are satisfied.

Escape Fast Food Guilt - Easy to Cook Fast Food at Home

Are you tired of feeling guilty about stopping off at McDonald's or the Pizza Place to pick up dinner after an exhausting day at work? Turn over a new leaf by creating your own list of menus for fast food at home. It is much easier than you think. This way, you can have the ingredients in your refrigerator and pantry, ready for you to put on the table in about 30 minutes. Your family will be eating healthier and your food budget will be smaller.

One of my favorite fast food ingredients is supermarket roast chicken. You can eat it as roast chicken one night, and use the leftovers in a variety of ways. The first night, serve it with a packaged salad and a boxed rice pilaf. The second night you can shred the leftovers and add them to a main dish Caesar salad, make tacos, or pasta with Alfredo sauce.

Thin, boneless pork chops work well for fast food at home meals. You have to be careful not to overcook them, but they are tasty and good with a variety of toppings and sauces. Simply dredge them in a light coating of flour and salt and pepper and sauté for a few minutes per side in about 1-2 tablespoons of light vegetable oil. You can then add some sliced mushrooms, ¼ cup of white wine or chicken broth, let the mixture thicken and you have a delicious main course. Serve with a packaged rice or pasta blend, make a salad or quick-cooking vegetable like asparagus or broccoli and dinner is on the table in a flash.

Packaged lettuces are so easy. You only have to run them through the salad spinner for a final rinse and they are ready to go. Add a can of mandarin oranges, marinated artichoke hearts and whatever else you have on hand and you have a quick salad. Keep some favorite bottled salad dressings in your refrigerator and you are ready to go. One of my favorites is Trader Joe's organic lettuce mixtures.

Dried pasta and packaged rice and couscous blends are handy to have in your pantry. I love Uncle Ben's long grain and wild rice and Mahatma Spanish rice and yellow saffron rice mixes. They are great side dishes for any meat that you choose. Cook up your choice of pasta, top it with one of the tasty jars of prepared pasta sauces, make a salad and you have dinner on the table in about 30 minutes.

Start your fast food stash gradually and start creating menus, a few each week and before you know it, you will become a fast food at home junkie!

In the refrigerator: Roast chicken, packaged lettuce, Parmesan cheese and easy to prepare vegetables such as broccoli, and asparagus, plus a jar of chopped garlic and a lemon or two. A package of frozen peas adds some variety to your vegetable selection. I add a teaspoon of mint jelly to frozen peas to make them fresh tasting.

In the pantry: package rice and couscous blends, pasta of your choice, a few jars of pasta sauces, canned mandarin oranges, marinated artichoke hearts, black olives, and bottled salad dressings.

Here is a quick chicken soft taco recipe that my family loves.
Chicken Soft Tacos
(adjust amounts to your serving size)

Left over Shredded chicken (from the roast chicken or chickens you bought)
Flour or corn tortillas
Jarred Pace Picante sauce (I like the chunky stuff)
Shredded Mexican blend cheese
Shredded lettuce
Chopped tomato

Mix Picante sauce with the shredded chicken until it is moistened. Let it sit while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.

Warm the tortillas in a 300 degree oven. Put the chicken, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese into serving bowls. Let everyone make their own tacos.

Healthy, Delicious, and Easy Vegetarian Cobb Salad Recipe

Below is a simple and delicious recipe for Cobb salad. Notice it is vegetarian - a healthier alternative to the traditional Cobb salad as the chicken, bacon, iceberg lettuce, and blue cheese have been omitted and replaced with more nutrient dense power foods such as avocado and flax meal. If you would like to increase the protein content, you can add sliced grilled chicken breast back to the ingredient list.

Vegetarian Cobb Salad: (Serves 2)

Ingredients:

2 eggs, hard boiled, chopped
1 head romaine lettuce, coarsely chopped
1 bunch watercress, ends trimmed and coarsely chopped
1/2 avocado, cubed
1/2 cup grape tomatoes, halved
2 tablespoons pitted Kalamata olives, chopped
1/4 chopped (2 ounces) goat cheese, crumbled (you can also substitute feta cheese)
1 tablespoon flax meal

Dressing:

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 1/2 tablespoons while balsamic vinegar (or regular balsamic)
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/2 tablespoon fresh thyme

Directions:

1. Place 2 eggs in small pot w/ cold water. Bring to a low boil for 10 minutes. Remove and cool.
2. In a small bowl, combine dressing ingredients and mix well.
3. Thoroughly wash and dry greens (pat with paper towel or use salad spinner). Place in large salad bowl and toss with 1/2 of dressing. Add remaining ingredients (including egg), and drizzle with remaining dressing.

Tips:

Be sure to use organic vegetables in this salad. Organic produce are much healthier for you because they contain more nutrients, vitamins, and minerals than commercially grown vegetables. Organic produce tend to be fresher, tastier, and will also be free of harmful pesticides and herbicides.

How to Clean a Suit Jacket

If you are a man there is pretty much no way you can get through life without owing a suit coat. The suit jacket is an extremely important part of your wardrobe even if you do not wear a suit to work, you will need to have quick access to one throughout your life. weddings, interviews, funerals, special events; let's face it a suit is essential. Ideally, the best way to keep your jacket clean is by using a professional dry cleaner, sometimes expensive professional cleaning is not a option due to price and/or time constraints. This article covers how to clean your suit jacket at home without having to take it to the dry cleaners. Some of the key items you will need to get the job done yourself are;

* A clothes brush
* A stain removal stick, pen or spray
* A clothing steamer or iron with a steam feature
* A soft clean cloth (can be purchased at clothing stores or dry cleaners)
* A suit hanger

The first thing to do is take out your clothing brush and brush away any loose dust, dirt and lint from your jacket. After brushing, hang the coat on a hanger (wooden is better than plastic) now re-brush the coat focusing on the side panels and sleeves.

Next, use your stain removal pen or stick to take out any small stains that are on the jacket. You can get a stain stick at most grocery stores or drug stores in the same isle as laundry detergent. Be careful when using the stain removal pen if you use too much solution you can damage your jacket or cause a different type of stain.

Next, Steam your jacket using a clothing steamer or a iron with steam feature. Hang the coat on your hanger and hold the steam about 10 inches from your suit. If you are using an iron, you may need to hold it closer. Make sure you steam the entire suit on all sides.

Next, use your clean cloth to lightly dust off the jacket and buff up the surface of it. Try and rub the cloth in line with the nap of the fabric.

Finally leave the garment to hang in a room with very good air flow this will help dry the jacket from steaming and air it out, leaving it smelling clean.

Arugula is one of the many "new" greens making their way onto supermarket shelves in the United States, although in this case this marvelous herb has long been known and loved in Europe, especially Italy.

Yes, one of the surprising facts about arugula is that is classed as an herb. It is not just a variety of lettuce, as many people often surmise upon first seeing it.

It also goes by many names in addition to "arugula." Some of these are "garden rocket," "rucola," "rocket salad," "roquette," and,. simply, "rocket."

Arugula is a great source of vitamin C, also iron. It has been grown around the Mediterranean for centuries. The Romans considered it to be an aphrodisiac.

You can use arugula in salads as you would lettuce or spinach; just wash it thoroughly, spin it dry in a salad spinner (or drain it in a colander) and shred it into bite-sized pieces before adding.

The tastiest way to use arugula use it in a cooked recipe, such as a pasta or meat dish. Arugula has a natural peppery taste that goes well in Italian recipes particularly.

Here's an arugula recipe my family really loves. Actually, the star of the recipe is the spaghetti-plus-ham, but in my opinion it's the arugula and olives that really make it special.

Ingredients:

1 lb spaghetti

1/4 pound ham, thinly sliced

5 cups arugula

1 small chopped onion

1 cup parmesan cheese

juice of 1/2 lemon

1/4 cup olive oil

1/2 lb chopped pitted olives

4 tomatoes, quartered

Directions

1. Cook spaghetti in a large pot. Drain and set aside.

2. Cut the ham into small pieces. Place in a skillet. Add onion and olives. Cook over medium heat for 3 minutes.

3. Add ingredients from skillet (ham, onion, olives) to spaghetti.

4. Add arugula, cheese and lemon juice to spaghetti. Mix well.

5. Divide the spaghetti onto 4 serving plates. Place tomato quarters (4 each) on top of the plates of spaghetti. Drizzle olive oil over the tomatoes.

Serve and enjoy!

Preserving Herbs From Your Home Herb Garden

Herbs are tremendously useful in so many ways. Your home herb garden has been planted, watered, taken care of, and you've watched the plants grow and thrive. Now it's time to learn how to use those wonderful herbs and it requires a little bit of work.

The first step in using the results of your garden is to harvest them. Harvesting the herb does not mean removing the entire plant and timing is a very important element. The herb's essential oils can be dispersed by the wind and the heat, and on extremely wet days, fewer oils are produced by the plants. The best time to harvest your herbs is during midsummer, on a calm and dry morning. Harvest them right before the flowers open in the morning and just after the dew has dried from the leaves. Take only a certain amount of growth and be careful not to take more than a third of the herb's foliage at one time, since the plant will need the remaining foliage to continue to grow well. Also inspect the herb for any damaged leaves or insects before harvesting it.

Using fresh herbs right out of your garden is a delight. Make sure to clean the herbs before using them fresh in recipes. To clean fresh herbs, fill a bowl with cool water and place the herbs in the bowl. For a larger quantity, use the cleaned kitchen sink. Add about two tablespoons of salt to the water. Any insects present on the herbs will be driven away by the salt in the water, without damaging the plant. To dry the herbs, remove them from the water and place in a salad spinner for quick drying.

Of course, herbs don't have to be used at the time they are picked. They can be preserved for later use in three ways by: drying, freezing, or preserving them in salt or vinegar.

Drying herbs: remove any foliage near the base and bundle six to twelve stems together, securing the bundle with a string. Hang the bundle upside down in a cool place and away from sunlight. Some herbs lend themselves to drying in individual leaves. To dry individual leaves, place them on a rack or screen. To dry the leaves properly, it's important to remember to turn them often. A few more automated ways of drying leaves, though also less satisfactory, are appliances like dehydrators, ovens or microwave ovens.

Another fairly simple way to preserve herbs for later use is freezing them. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with wax paper. Cut the herbs into quarter inch pieces and place them on the baking sheet in the freezer. Once the herbs are frozen, remove them from the baking sheet and place them together in a bag. Store the bag in the freezer until needed.

Herbs can also be preserved herbs in a medium such as salt or vinegar. For example, to preserve chopped basil, mint, or tarragon, cover the herbs with vinegar and they be will be available to use for several months. Making a flavored salt is a great way to use herbs. Alternate layers of fresh herbs and salt on a flat surface. When the herbs are completely dry, separate them from the flavored salt and store them in an airtight container.

Each herb can have its own set of instructions on how to use, harvest, and preserve. To get the most out of your home herb garden, make sure to research each type of herb and the best ways to use it.
